Christmas: Different Tree Ideas

I am sure that most of you have your Christmas tree up by now (if not, what are you waiting for!!??!?). However, I figured I would profile some not-so-typical trees since I am feeling festive and excited for Christmas (just 2 days!!).

The retro look is fantastic and the little animal scene at the bottom is adorable.

This is my friend Bruno's 'dead-branch tree'. He and his partner Bruce adorned the tree entirely with home-made ornaments made from paper maché, yarn, and some of the stars are made from toast! I love this whole concept and think it is a great option for a small space.

Christmas Decor: Painted Tree

Design Sponge published an interesting take on alternatives to the traditional Christmas tree. They painted a Christmas tree on a living room wall and hung ornaments on string in front of the tree to give the appearance of a decorated tree. With the addition of presents in front, this is certainly a festive and creative effect.

I am a big fan of bold reds with black and white. It provides a great pop of colour. I also love the way this fashionable gal paired the fur stole with her outfit. It is fantastic.

Il Neige...Phoenix Journal

Today, I came across the Phoenix's web journal. I have been a huge Phoenix fan since I heard "Too Young" in the film Lost in Translation. If you are fan of their music or just of great photos, check our their web journal here.They have some fantastic photos from their travels on tour and in their hometown of Paris. I love this wintery picture of the Louvre taken recently by Phoenix band member Christian Mazzalai.

Le Penguin

Back in July, I posted about my Le Chien picture that I made to replicate Picasso's famous piece of the same namesake. Yesterday, I made an accompanying piece similar to Picasso's Le Pingouin. I decided not to replicate this piece as closely as I had the previous one as I felt that Picasso's Penguin looked kind of sneaky, and not friendly (I couldn't put him my bedroom staring at me with his beady eye!) My penguin is serious, but not intimidating. Check him out!

Christmas Recipe: Chocolate Dipped Shortbread

Last night I made my mom's recipe for shortbread. I told Will that I was making shortbread and he seemed less than impressed (apparently, he had never had my mom's shortbread!). So, to make the shortbread even more enticing for him, I dipped half of each cookie in chocolate!

Result: extremely positive!! I think the cookies look like little Japanese dolls. Will thinks they look like Beatles. I can see that.

Recipe:

(Yields 2 dozen cookies)

1 cup of Butter
2/3 cup of Brown Sugar
2 cups of Flour

Cream butter until light and fluffy.
Add brown sugar and mix until thoroughly blended.
Gradually add flour until fully blended.

Roll into 6-8 inch tubes approx 2 inches wide and chill for 1 hour. I wrap mine in wax or parchment paper. Pre-heat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Once chilled, unwrap from paper and let sit for a few minutes to let the dough soften a little. Then, slice the tubes into 1/4 inch wide cookies and set on cookie sheet. Bake for 18-20 mins or until golden.

As for the chocolate:

Melt 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips over a double boiler. Once melted, dip cooled cookies in the chocolate and set on wax or parchment paper. I then placed mine in the freezer for about 10 mins to set the chocolate.
