Film I Love: Exit Through the Gift Shop
Thierry Guetta aka Mr. Brain-wash
Anyone who has heard of the infamous street artist Banksy will likely know that he is extremely secretive when it comes to revealing his identity. There has been speculation and reports of his identity but it seems that no one has confirmed his true identify. That is part of what makes the premise behind Exit Through the Gift Shop so intriguing. There was to be a documentary made capturing street artists doing their work including Mr. Banksy. However, through an interesting and mind-boggling turn of events Banksy instead turns the idea back on filmmaker (more like 'camera-man') Thierry Guetta and creates a wildly entertaining portrait of a man who at times seems crazy or genius and often both. Keeping to his reputation, Banksy, who appears in the film, still maintains the secrecy of his identity with his face shadowed or digitized and his voice muffled.
This film also features great interviews with other influential graphic artist including Shepard Fairey, famous for his iconic Obama poster and OBEY campaigns.
